Needlepoint requires very few tools and supplies. The following is a quick list of what you will need to start you first needlepoint project!
1. Needles
Tapestry needles are the correct choice for needlepoint. These should be changed frequently due to wear and tarnish.
Price Range- Tapestry needles usually cost around $2.00 per package.
- Needles will last through two or three projects, especially if stored properly, but should be changed frequently due to wear and tarnish.
2. Needle Threader
Though not necessary, needle threaders definitely make the needle threading process quick and painless!
Price Range- Needle threaders can be purchased for around $1.00 in generally any sewing supply section of a department store.
- If taken care of, this item will last indefinitely.
3. Scissors
Small, sharp scissors are needed for needlepoint.
They should have narrow tips to allow you to snip out mistakes. The scissors that you purchase for your stitching should only be used for that purpose.
Price Range- Scissors can be purchased for under $10.00 in most sewing supply sections of a major department store.
- If only used for needlepoint or embroidery, you are likely to get many years of use from your scissors before needing to change them.
4. Frame
Whether stretcher bars, or a scroll frame, this is a necessity for keeping your work neat and even.
Price Range- Frames can range in price depending on what amenities you desire. Local hobby stores carry them for under $30.00 (usually much less).
- This should be a one time purchase, but it is convenient to have a variety of sizes on hand for various projects.
5. Frame Stand
Some people prefer to attach their frame to a stand, thus, freeing both of their hands to work their project.
Price Range- Frame Stands can also range in price from under $10.00 to $300.00, and more depending on what features you are looking for.
- Chosen wisely, this a one time expense.
6. Laying Tool
Laying tools are used to produce neat and even stitches. There are many possibilities when considering a laying tool, some of which you might already have around your home such as large needles, a cocktail stirrer, a thin crochet hook (use the end without the hook).
Price Range- Laying tools are found easily in a local craft shop or around your home and range in price from FREE to under $10.00.
- This is a one time purchase.
7. Masking Tape or Bias Tape
These items are used to prevent raveling of canvas while you are working on your piece.
Price Range- Either of these tapes is easily found for under $5.00 at a local department store.
- Frequency of this purchase will really depend on how large the projects are that you are working on.
8. Fabric (or Canvas)
Canvas is used for needlepoint and is available in several sizes or canvas gauges.
Price Range- Prices for canvas depends on what you are purchasing. Purchased off the roll, it's usually not difficult to find basic canvas around $7.00-$10.00 per yard. It is worthy of mention, this is for a very basic canvas and as your experience and projects improve and grow, it is wise to invest in quality canvas. These projects at times can take considerable work, and you want your project to stand the test of time!
- Canvas can be purchased in packages, or off the roll either at a local craft store or online.
